Historic Resources Study, African American Communities along the C&O Canal, DC, 2021-2022While working at WSP, I completed a comprehensive Historic Resources Study (HSR) on historic African American communities along the lower 20 miles of the C&O Canal in DC and Maryland. The HSR provides a historic context for the National Park Service and staff at the C&O Canal National Historical Park staff to assist in future interpretation and research efforts. The study looks at the many ways historic African American individuals and communities interacted with the historically significant waterway culturally, socially, and economically.

Survey of 15 New Dominion Era Religious Buildings in Alexandria, VA, 2020-2021In partial fulfillment of a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), this intensive-level survey of 15 Modernist churches in Alexandria and environs resulted in a Management Summary submitted to the Virginia Department of Historic Resources in May 2021.

Phase II Evaluation Survey, Church of the Resurrection, Alexandria, VA, 2019-2020Commissioned by the City of Alexandria's Office of Housing, this report was prepared in response to a Section 106 process requirement by the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. The report was submitted via VDHR's Cultural Resource database, V-CRIS.

NRHP Nomination, Swann-Daingerfield House, Alexandria, VA, 2018-2019Listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register in April 2019 and subsequently listed on the National Register of Historic Places in May 2019, this two-year project was managed by Heather in concert with representatives of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources.

Survey of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne Resources, Alexandria, VA, 2014-2016A field survey of Art Deco and Streamline Moderne resources in the Alexandria neighborhood of Del Ray resulted in the documentation of 15 resources and one Multiple Property (thematic) nomination. A correlated project to prepare a PIF for the George Washington High (now Middle) School was undertaken in 2016 in conjunction with the City of Alexandria's Historic Preservation staff.

Digital Content for SAH's Archipedia, 2014-2019Over the course of five years, Heather contributed 95 distinct essays on historic buildings, landscapes, and structures across America for the Society of Architectural Historians' Archipedia database, as well as participated in the peer review process for other authors' entries.

Digital Content for The Cultural Landscape Foundation (TCLF), 2012-2014Heather provided several essays on American landscape architects for the TCLF's Pioneers digital database; several essays on historic landscapes for the What's Out There database; photographs of cultural landscapes; and conducted tours at special TCLF events held in Washington, D.C. Her essays on Kenichi Nakano and Harriet Pattison appear in Shaping the Postwar Landscape, the third volume of TCLF’s well-known reference project, Pioneers of American Landscape Design, published by the University of Virginia Press in 2018.

HSRs and Private House Histories and Narratives, various clients, 2005-2013A Historic Structure Report (HSR) is a preservation planning tool that provides documentary, graphic, and physical information about a property's history and its current (existing) conditions. Over the years, McMahon has provided the historical analysis element of HSRs for clients such as Max Strang Architecture in Miami, FL; the Galfione-Coxes of Charlottesville, VA; and the Capitol Square Preservation Council in Richmond, VA.

HABS, South elevation of a Tavern-Store-Kitchen, Route 29 & Route 631, Madison County, VA, 2006The Historic American Buildings Survey (HABS) was established in 1933 to record buildings of historic significance through the medium of measured drawings. This permanent collection comprising more than 581,000 by-hand drawings is housed at the Library of Congress. In 2003 and 2006, Heather contributed to this body of work with the James City Tavern and Arrington Farm House, both in Madison County, Virginia.
